The Syndicate is a multi-disciplinary, intergenerational collective creating experimental, partially improvised, opera. We create performance in joyful and enraged disruption of coercive power dynamics. We create collaboratively in a horizontal, consensus-based model.
We believe ideas like mutual aid and decentralized leadership define both improvisation and social organization—by practicing one, we prepare for the other. We know we achieve liberation through solidarity. We know that we are far from the first to attempt collective artistic decision-making. The liberatory aesthetics of improvised art, especially in America, have been forged specifically in resistance to white supremacy, heteronormativity and state violence.
We stay present, grounded and attentive when we improvise together. We practice the kinds of care humanity desperately needs right now; the kinds of care that are snubbed, devalued and dismissed by our dominant cultural narrative. Improvisation allows us to practice new futures and new possibilities—to create science fiction. We share these imaginative, science-fictional spaces with our audiences, in the hope that they feel a sense of relief, recognition and resilience.
